Many writers or wannabe writers/authors never get to complete their next book because they don't plan for it, making rough manuscripts around the storyline, prepare the characters they need for the book, etc. One must plan it out or it could fail and leave you with writer's block. I need to plan everything around my eBooks I write as I run a business first, and my writing is just a hobby for now and not something fulltime. The same goes with my reviewing of books. If I don't plan around my spare time, when available, everything comes to a quick standstill.
To start with, find your passion. By realising your passion makes it easier to plan and write. My passion is Christian based non fiction teachings and novels, now penning the next 2 eBooks. Another passion I discovered is the crime./suspense type, and now I'm penning my first book about a private investigator and all the cases he solves for his clients. It will become a series after the first book. These are my passions. What is yours?
Without a passion for something you are going nowhere. Next, is who are your targets? What market are you aiming for? Is it just adults or maybe children and teenagers? There are also age groups and most groups relate to various topics or certain genre of books, that which attracts them to read such kinds. Therefore, what market are you aiming for? This helps when you start writing your next book.
Next, one must define your demographics. Which areas or cities/countries are you aiming for? Again, gender and age falls into this category, plus more. My books are aimed for most countries worldwide, and hopefully, from teenagers and up. Demographics help you determine what you are writing about and what is your passion, which market and demographics will it be targeting.
One must continuously expand your knowledge about what you are writing, and one must work around how to make your book/eBook stand out. All this will make what offers success or not. Yes, plenty of marketing and other issues come into play here too. But let's stick to the basics for now. Gather all the information you need when you plan to write about something. There are plenty of resources out there on the www for you. Research, research and more research is needed. I googled about cities, suburbs, people, addresses, even street names to plan some of my writings, just to make it more authentic.
Writing a book series is slightly different. But using the basics above will get you going. It can be challenging to write a series; this is the bad news, but you can get plenty of followers later on; and this is the good news about it all. To do follow ups with the same character as the central point of each book, then adding new ones that differ from previous book/s, is where the challenge comes in. Just follow all the guides above and you will make it. It won't always be an easy journey, but press through and look into the future.
Enjoy the ride! Looking forward to your next book and/or series...
